RUGBY shoppers have been put on alert over a spate of handbag and purse snatches in the town centre.

A gang of youths escaped with cash, credit cards and prescription drugs in three separate incidents on Saturday.

Three females, whom the victims described as East European or Kosovan, snatched a purse from the handbag of a woman in the New Look store in the Clock Towers Shopping Centre at about 3pm and another from a woman buying fruit at Tutti Fruiti, in Market Square.

Police are linking the thefts to an earlier theft at the new library, in Little Elborow Street at about noon, when two males and a female approached a woman and engaged her in conversation

Police are now studying footage from the town centre's CCTV cameras to try to identify the thieves.

Insp. Dave Fry, of Warwickshire police, said: "The thieves could have been part of a larger group.

"Although there were two men and a woman involved in the first theft and three women in the second and third incidents, we are definitely linking all three together.

Insp. Fry said women should be particularly careful as handbags were proving an easy target for the thieves.

Saturday's thefts are the latest in a string of incidents in Rugby where pensioners and shoppers have been the victims of bag snatchers.

On April 19, an 87-year-old pensioner had her handbag ripped from her arm as she unlocked the front door of her Clifton Road home.

On April 13, a shopper at Sains-bury's in Dunchurch Road was distracted by a thief who made off with her handbag and in March an 82-year-old woman had her bag snatched twice in 10 days as she left the Rugby Workers' Inion Club in Oliver Street after a game of bingo.
