AN armed mugger was jailed for six years after failing in three bids to rob women inside an hour.
Despite brandishing a knife and threatening to stab one 64-year-old woman, Desmond Quigley emerged empty-handed from his crime spree carried out in broad daylight in the Magdalene area of the city.
Lord Philip told Quigley, 23, at the High Court in Edinburgh yesterday: "These are serious Brochures Printing offences involving the use of a lethal weapon and causing considerable and continuing distress to the people you attacked."
Quigley, of Magdalene Gardens, Edinburgh, admitted attacking and attempting to rob three women at walkways near his home on October 24 last year.
The Crown accepted his not guilty plea to a fourth charge of assaulting a 62-year-old blind woman and robbing her of her handbag on the same day.
Quigley approached his first victim, Wendy Selkirk, 53, Chanel Jewellery at lunchtime and said: "Here's an idea for you. Give me your f*****g money."
He produced a knife but Mrs Selkirk told him she was on her way to
embroidered patches work at a nearby Asda store and brought out her staff cards to indicate she was not carrying money.
Advocate depute Johanna Johnston said Mrs Selkirk felt "very angry" following the attack, but later suffered panic attacks and was signed off work for a fortnight.
Quigley struck twice in the next 35 minutes, but each time the brave victims held on to their bags and he left empty-handed.
Defence solicitor-advocate John Keenan said that while serving a previous sentence for assault Quigley became addicted to heroin.
