TWO vicious muggers who targeted frail OAPs in a reign of terror across the region were this week beginning jail terms totalling 15 years.
led flexible light stripsThomas Glasheen and Joseph Loughran carried out 20 robberies and thefts on vulnerable pensioners outside post offices and shops in Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted, Northchurch and Abbots Langley.
The 'mean and cruel' robbers would sit in Loughran's maroon Ford Sierra outside post offices and shopping centres waiting for the old folk to appear with their cashed pensions.
One of the robbers would then snatch the handbag or purse containing the victim's money and run back to the waiting car, which would then speed off.
Some of the elderly women who were as old as 86 were left with injuries as they were pushed over or tried to cling on to their money. One 81-year-old victim had suffered broken fingers as she hung on to her bag, while an 83-year-old woman had since died.
Another victim, a 66-year-old Northchurch woman, said she was lucky to escape unhurt.
"It's terrible really to pick on old people and steal their pension," she said. "It's a lot of money for some people.
"You don't expect that kind of thing to happen around here and I just want to put it behind me, I would not want to meet him again."
Loughran, 30, of Paston Road, Hemel Hempstead, appeared at St Albans Crown Court last week and pleaded guilty to two robberies. He asked for six more to be taken into consideration, along with nine thefts, and was sent to prison for a total of seven and a half years.
Glasheen, 43, of Wood View, Hemel Hempstead, denied three counts of robbery but was found guilty by a jury after Loughran gave evidence against him. He was sent to prison for eight years.
Summing up, Judge Seddon Cripps told the pair: "The crimes were mean and cruel and of soft targets. You robbed them of the little money they had and left them with something they will not forget for the rest of their lives."
Judge Cripps said he had given Loughran credit for giving evidence against Glasheen.
The police officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Sergeant Cliff Ellis, said he was pleased the pair responsible for the 'distasteful' crimes were now behind bars.
